I cannot say enough wonderful things about this fabulous piece of jewelry!
It is in exquisite condition, it runs well, comes complete in its original box, has its matched enamel watch pin AND an enamel link chain, has a skeleton back, and it's a beautiful color turquoise blue. Wowee!
This 17 jewel watch Swiss watch made by Bucherer and probably purchased at one of their shops abroad during a trip there in the early 1900s, this watch shows no apparent signs of ever having been worn!
When we purchased it, it was attached to the chain and the pin was in the box. It is possible that the original owner did wear it on the chain. (note: while the pin is hallmarked from Bucherer and bears a sterling mark of 925, and is without doubt an exact match to the watch, the chain bears no hallmarkings or sterling mark and the shade of blue is slightly deeper and brighter so although purchased together we are not 100% sure the chain is original to the watch).
The silver is gold washed (gilt) and in wonderful shape. The enamel (perfect) is on a machine-engineered ground (guilloché) which gives it a wonderful visual texture.
The word 'guilloché' is French, and is defined this way: "Guilloché is a decorative engraving technique in which a very precise intricate repetitive pattern or design is mechanically engraved into an underlying material with fine detail. Specifically, it involves a technique of engine turning, called guilloché in French after the French engineer "Guillot", who invented a machine that could lightly incised fine patterns and designs on metallic surfaces. The machine improved upon the more time-consuming practice of making similar designs by hand, allowing for greater delicacy, precision, and closeness of the line, as well as greater speed."
The pin measures 1" across and with the watch attached, measures 2 3/8". The pendant 'ball' measures approx. 7/8" in diameter and approx. 5/8" thick. The crystals over the face and back mechanism is very thick and rounded. Of course, the see-through back crystal which exposes the watchworks (called skeleton) adds tremendous visual interest and curiousity to the watch. The chain measures 28" long and has 12 lozenge shaped enamel links.
Truly a wonderful antique Swiss-made jewelry masterpiece!
