This 10 1/4" diameter plaque is a beautiful complement to its mate which is listed separately (twt2988). This one, while gorgeous, has a couple of condition issues whereas the other does not.
Like its mate, this plaque's maker is attributed to Volkstedt, ca. 1900. Similar pieces occasionally appear on the open market and these are very much like plaques sold through Christie's a few years ago. Those were unmarked as well but attributed to Volkstedt. It is without doubt that they were designed and fabricated by a masterful porcelain maker from Germany.
This plaque depicts a couple cuddling in an amorous manner. The details are beautiful - from their delicate, graceful, and perfect fingertips to the decoration on their clothing. It is very, very complex and 3-dimensional (3" deep!!!). It is in a matte finish. The color palette is vibrant pastel shades.
As previously stated, it is 10 1/4" in diameter and 3" deep. It has the typical Volkstedt style heavy duty hanging ring which adds 1". On the upper edge near the hanging ring is an impressed number '17'. The back is not shown (we can only upload 9 photos) and it is plain white with no other identifying marks. One photo shows a chip on the back edge - not to be seen when hanging.
We wish we could declare this to be in mint condition, but alas (wow, that's an old-fashioned word) the man's head has been glued on from some sort of earlier accident. From a foot away you cannot see it but the photos, taken close up, show the break/repair very clearly.
Don't forget to look for the other listing which shows the couple romancing via a musical experience! We can only load 9 photos but we do have one available showing both plaques in one view. Email if you wish to see them together.
