If you're a 'fan' of butterfly pins, how can you resist this one!
This wonderful pin is featured front and center on the cover of Dale Reeves Nicholls book, Antique Enameled Jewelry. It is also shown and described on page 152. This is exactly the same pin but in a different colorway (in our opinion, a much more interesting and pretty colorway).
The pin, in excellent condition, measures 2 3/4" across and is gilt silver (aka vermeil) with coral dangles. Ca. 1920, Chinese Export period. The coral dangles represent the silk tassels usually found on the handles of fans. The pinback has a rollover safety clasp.
The lovely larger butterfly features many different colors ranging from orange to turquoise, to yellow, and to green. There are 5 cabochon turquoise stones that are bezel set which are then framed by an upper and lower row of smaller butterflies. There is a small coral cabochon on the very bottom that ties in with the coral dangles - all a rich dark salmon color.
On the back side, you can see the fretwork and a tiny plaque that says 'silver'. It tests for sterling grade silver (925/1000 parts silver).
Dale Reeves Nicholls values this brooch in the $350.00-450.00 and it is featured on the cover of her book (shown in last photo). We currently have the lapis one shown on the cover listed separately.
