This beautiful and hefty sterling silver pin is marked handwrought sterling Kalo. It is a famous and highly admired company that worked out of Chicago and did a lot to further the Arts & Crafts style in the first quarter of the 20th century. Today, pieces designed as much as 100 years ago look very modern!
This pin measures 2 1/4" x 1 5/8". I have seen and found the smaller size of the same design on ebay and on the internet but not in this larger size! It doesn't hurt that it is in supremely mint condition. Very well cared for and respected by its original owner. It was heavily tarnished (not a pretty patina) and our jeweler did a magnificent job polishing it to a mirror-like finish. We realize that not all of our collector's like a bright polished finish, but many others do and so we do not regret that our guy did what he did!
The pin depicts acorns and oak leaves - a very common theme from the Arts & Crafts time period. They are so stylized that they may in fact be berries and leaves! The leaves are veined while the acorns/berries are deeply cross-hatched. It has a very nice whiplash style border - a hangover motif from the Art Nouveau period which in fact, flourished during the same years as the Arts & Crafts movement. Thus the crossover in design motifs. A+++!!
