It took quite some time to figure out what this piece was all about but once we did it seemed so obvious!
This horse is lying down with its legs tucked up under him. If you look carefully, you will see that one of the legs is turned up and is what is up by the horse's mouth - scratching an itch perhaps? There are incised carvings to describe details such as the eyes, mouth, tail, mane, hooves, etc.
It measures 1 1/2" x 1 1/4" x 3/4".
Recumbent horses are considered very desirable subjects and often bring very high prices at international auctions.
The term "harlequin" refers to the relatively rare form of black and white jade.
The black lines reflect both natural occlusions and gradations in color.
