Note: The paper ink painted silhouette shown in the opening is only for display purposes and is of no additional value, but will be sent with the frame.

This fabulous frame is a bit of a mystery as to what type of stone it is carved from. It is solid black in color and is about 3/4" thick from the flat back to the top of the raised oval area on the front.

It is possibly marble or it could be onyx or other hardstone. It is carved from one large slab. Of course the availability of solid black (no speckles or other anomalies visible) stone in the mid-1800s is different from today's stock.

It measures 7 1/2" x 9". The oval opening is approx. 2 3/4" x 4 1/8". The back has a metal plate attached with 3 tiny screws (4th is missing.) All around the frame is a incised floral motif which is gold. It weighs a remarkable 2.4.8 pounds.

Condition is excellent. From the front view there is one tiny chip on the outer edge. From the back side there is a chip sliver on one corner. Because it is solid stone and is black all the way through, you cannot see the tiny chip on the front and the one on the back doesn't interfere with anything. See photos.
