This wonderful catalog is from the Sotheby's sale of the New-York Historical Society Paperweight Collection on January 18, 1995. It is an amazing reference. The sale included over 400 paperweights in 317 lots. There are well over 60 full page photographs, each with multiple paperweights. Several full-page detailed views as well.
The collection's paperweights, range from American and French Antiques to Millville weights to Chinese 1930s weights. These weights were collected and donated to the society by Jennie H. Sinclair and Francis MacDonald. The bulk of the collection were French or American antique 19th century paperweights from Baccarat, Clichy, St. Louis, Boston and Sandwich, and the New England Glass Company. The catalog includes a history of the NYHS by Wendell Garrett and a history of the paperweight collection by Paul Hollister.
This is a "must-have" catalog for every paperweight collector. It includes the prices realized for each lot. The highest price was $46,000 for a spectacular Clichy Bouquet weight, but it is also surprising how many lots sold for under $1,000.
This is the same collection as the one described in the book "Glass Paperweights of the New-York Historical Historical Society" by Paul Hollister (1974).
8 1/2" by 10 1/2". 194 pages.
As an aside, I personally had the privilege to visit this collection when it was housed at the Historical Society. I only wish I knew more about what I was looking at at that time (teens, early 20's). One of my favorites things to see there, along with the Audubon's were these paperweights. It never occurred to me that they would sell off this (and other's of their collections) but they needed to raise money and make room. Based on the realized prices, there wasn't one weight that did not sell which means they are now all in the hands of private people who will continue to admire and care for them. Such is the way of life!
