I about flipped when I saw this framed handpainted plaque! I guessed Sevres or Limoges, however, the back was sealed so I couldn't be sure. So you can imagine the surprise I experienced when after laboriously removing the backing that was glued to both the wooden frame and the porcelain plaque, that the early mark of Copeland Garrett revealed itself! That makes this item rarer and earlier than I had expected. I was unable to unearth an artist's signature but some of the backing paper still remains firmly glued to the porcelain and might be covering up such an indication. Thankfully, the Copeland hallmark was possible to see and photograph. The plaque (not including the frame) measures a very large 7 1/4" x 26 1/4". My research uncovered only one comparable, but much smaller plaque from this era of Copeland Garrett which sold in 1997 for approx. $2,000.00.
The distinguishing characteristics of this plaque are the magnificently rendered flowers (varieties of roses, foxglove, and morning glory) and the realistically depicted birds (birds of paradise) and accompanying foliage. Wonderful darkened burnished raised gold scrolls surround these flora and fauna compositions.
The frame measures approx. 13 1/2" in width making it perfect for hanging on just that one sliver of bare wall you have in your home! It is approx. 33" tall and 1 3/4" wide. The inner gilded frame is 5/8" wide. The gilded frame and black velvet matting suits the plaque but appears to be of more modern vintage (probably 20th century). The frame is in good to very good condition. If you prefer, before shipping I will have the back resealed (with the area of the C&G mark left bare) and the few spots of gilding on the outer frame touched up. Otherwise, it will ship as is.
The background color of the plaque grades from a pure white to a pale, pale blush pink. The painted areas of the plaque are in virtually pristine condition. There are a couple of minute surface flakes on the background area that do not show in the photos. From the back (see labeled photos) you can see two areas of the porcelain plaque that are chipped. They do not affect the plaques stability or view. The plaque is approx. 1/2" thick. Due to the size of the plaque, plus the framing, you can well imagine that this item is fairly heavy. Shipping weight is approximately 20 pounds.
We are unable to ship this item outside of the USA.
