Can't help repeating myself, but gotta say Wow! Yet another wonderful late Victorian period vanity item. The painting is very sophisticated and expertly executed portrait of Madame Recamier (said to be sought after by Napoleon and found in many, many plaques and miniatures).
It is in excellent condition. She is wearing a hair ornament (like a hatpin).
The jar is 4" across in diameter at the widest and 3 1/4" high. The painted porcelain lid measures 2 3/4" in diameter. The metal rim has darkened with age. The metal appears to be brass. The polished bottom shows normal age wear scratches. The inside of the lid is a mirror which has quite a bit of oxidation.
