Nippon was made in Japan between 1891 and 1921. Many of the moriage pieces, such as this one, were made before 1891 and are therefore not marked. This is guaranteed to be authentic and not a reproduction. This beautiful hand painted vase has a dark green background and various shades of green, brown and white in the moriage treatment. Peeking out from the moriage design are vivid poppy blooms in lavender, purple and white shading on the front and white with a touch of yellow on the back. Extremely fine detail highlights were added in white and green on top of the moriage after the vase was otherwise completed. Excellent overall condition especially for a moriage piece with no chips, cracks or hairlines. There is some minor moriage missing. See the close ups in photo # 8 showing what appears to be mostly a factory flaw with missing moriage on the top, photo #9 showing a partially missing poppy bud toward the bottom of the vase , and #7 showing missing moriage on the bottom rim. There is so much detail on the vase that there could be other minor issues but these are the primary flaws and still the vase presents beautifully. The piece is about 9 3/4" high and about 4" at the widest point. This is one of several pieces of Nippon that will be listed from our personal collection.
