The American Card Player Book by Dick & Fitzgerald 1881
Published by Dick & Fitzgerald, NY, in 1881 this multicolor hard back book is in fair condition and measures about 4 ½” by 7”. I only found one other copy of this book online and it is being offered at $1,000, while the 1864 version is between $2,000 and $2,500. According to the index, games described include Whist, Euchre, Cribbage, Bezique, Sixty-Six, Penuchle, Cassino, Draw Poker, and All-Fours. The book contains 149 pages of content for card games and in the front and back some awesome advertising for other books offered by Dick & Fitzgerald such as Dick’s One Hundred Amusements for Evening Parties, The Art and Etiquette of Making Love, Barber’s American Book of Ready-Made Speeches, The Magician’s Own Book, Rarey & Knowlson’s Complete Horse Tamer and Farrier and many more which were generally offered from 30 cents to $1.50. However Dick’s Encyclopedia of Practical Receipts and Processes cost a fortune at $5 or $6. Don’t you wish you could order these now at those prices!!! I have included numerous photos since I am not an expert in grading condition of books. Important matters to note on condition are that the bottom of the front cover and corners show wear and some rubbing and the back corner does as well, the binding is intact, and the only markings I found in the book are a note to the recipient RB from the people who gave the book and a hand written correction of a typo on page 149 (both of these are shown in photos).
