This is a piece of slate mined in the East Central area of Pennsylvania, an area referred to as the Slate Belt. The miners in that area would bring back pieces of slate that they would then decorate and use as game boards. This is just a simple checker board. Some get very elaborate. These would have been made circa 1900. This piece has some scratching of the painted surface and someone has written on the back with chalk but is a sample of what was once done. The slate is 18 inches wide by 18 inches long and about 1/2 inch thick, it weighs 12 pounds and 2 ounces.
