“Metals are my passion. I have found ways to combine them and get some striking effects– silver with gold, nickel with copper…”-Audrey Schenk
From my personal collection- If you follow our jewelry collection and the accompanying descriptions, (and, I hope, you do..) you would note that I have always been partial to a very modern chunky, handmade , combined precious and other metals jewelry which had flourished during the late 1960’s-1980’s.
I discovered the combined metals design jewelry of Audrey Schenk during a trip to Palm Beach, where I found this striking necklace in one of the local art jewelry boutiques. “The forte of Audrey Schenk’s art are her imaginative creations which excite the eye with their size, shape and shine” wrote an art critic about her. The necklace offered here bears a testimony to this statement. I named it The New Mexico Landscape since many of Audrey Schenk pieces are reminiscent of the stark and angular shapes found in her native New Mexico landscape. Crafted in Alpaca, an alloy containing copper, zinc and nickel. (also referred to as a German Silver or Nickel Silver) and copper , the free form design of the central piece of the necklace is stunning beyond words. An abstract image cut from pure copper metal , is superimposed and adheres to a very shiny ( a result of hours of buffing in the artist’s studio) alpaca base and creates a very arresting effect. Three strands of gleaming alpaca beads, interspersed with copper beads , strung on brownish suede cords, are attached to the art piece through three separate openings on each of its sides. A suede loop and a small nickel square, the closure, complete this unusual design. The obverse side of the nickel base is imprinted with AUDREY SCHENK signature. It is a true collector’s item and very wearable as well.
