The free trading and unencumbered by borders Bedouins are known to bring to the market interesting wares from all over the Middle East and Asia.

From my personal collection- I received this very unusual necklace, in 1981, from a friend in Israel who had purchased it a few years earlier at a Bedouin market in the south of Israel. Because of their nomadic lifestyle, this Bedouin market, convenes once a week and had become a staple in the life the bustling city of Beer-Sheba. The free trading and unencumbered by borders Bedouins are known to bring to the market interesting wares from all over the Middle East and Asia.

I think that the flower interpreted in this carving is a water lily, possibly a lotus –both species very important and revered by the people of India, Afghanistan , China and others. The coloring is also consistent with the blue water lily- the bluish green of the Aventurine, the greenish Chalcedony beads, the yellow and pink quartz chips. This theory is also consistent with the various destinations of the Bedouins in pursuit of their trading routes.

A sizable, one piece of a pale greenish/blue aventurine, hand carved by a local (Afghani??) artisan into a shape of a water lily, is suspended from three strands of pink and yellow quartz chips and a strand of pale green chalcedony beads. The quartz chips are interspersed with naturally mined amethyst chips. The necklace has a silver-tone fishhook closure. The colors of the necklace are beautiful, pastel and very soothing. It is a n eye catching fashion accessory.
