Originating in Paris in 1887 by Jacques Hobe, the Hobe jewelry company has an outstanding reputation for fine costume pieces. Jacques' son, William, is credited with bringing the brand to the United States and being a master craftsman himself. A serious student of period design, William was able to translate historical designs to modern settings and also created many set designs for the motion pictures. The company closed in 1995.
I am a big fan of Hobe jewelry , appreciating it both for design and construction. This is the first piece I have had that is in the Egyptian Revival style, not easy to find.. The gold plated pendant is signed on the back as is the closure for the necklace. The beaded chain is done in art glass and carved jade beads. A wonderful example of Hobe. With its ancient opulence and mysterious symbols, Egyptian Revival jewelry gained a fervent interest after the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb.
Size: Beaded Chain: 19 inches; Pendant: 2.75" x 3.25" wide; Condition: Very Good; Circa; 1930s
