Wonderful example of an authentic Victorian English Whitby Jet and Vulcanite mourning necklace. A very high relief and detail cameo of a lady with long flowing tresses set on a heart. The necklace is 25 inches of a link chain jet. Difficult to find this style in very good vintage condition without chips. Weight is approx 28 grams. Late 1800s. Victorian black mourning jewelry became fashionable after the death of Prince Albert in England. Whitby jet is from a specific center in England. Truly a piece of history that can be easily worn today. Wonderful example. The cameo is made of vulcanite which is often dark brown but this one is black. At first I thought it was jet, because of the color but after more research, it is vulcanite.
"The northern coastal town of Whitby, located in North Yorkshire, become the center for turning the stone into jewellery and artifacts, which had its heyday during the Victorian era."
