The huge oval piece of agate in this vintage brooch measures a full 55mm x 40mm. In shades of brown, gold and orange, when held to the light are distinct bands of color. The plated setting is intricate open work in a ruffled design. Purchased in England. Condition is very good.
No gemstone is more creatively striped by nature than agate. Each individual agate forms by filling a cavity in a host rock. As a result, agate often is found as a round nodule with concentric bands like the rings of a tree trunk.
Size: 2.75 x 2.25 inches; Circa: 1930s
