The large oval piece of agate in this Victorian brooch measures a full 40 x 30mm. In shades of tan to brown the design is intricate and interesting. The pinchbeck setting is ornate and both twisted and scrolled. Pin closure is tight and is the old open C clasp with an extended pin. It was explained to me that this was a practical approach to assure that the pin would stay secure and allow it to pass through material twice. Purchased in ENgland. Condition is very good.
Size: 2.25 x 2 inches; Circa: 1880s
