The detail in this micro mosaic brooch is incredible. Tiny pieces of glass packed together to form floral designs and rows of arched decoration. Under magnification thin lines of twisted gold can be seen outlining the designs. No markings, set in brass. The open c clasp and hinge type help date this brooch. Just a gorgeous little piece of art.

The term “micro mosaic” refers to Italian mosaics composed of little glass bricks called tesserae. Packed with many pieces per square inch, this type of miniature mosaic was sold as fine jewelry to Victorian ladies in the early and mid-19th century, when the tourism trade blossomed in Rome.
