Wonderful example of authentic Victorian English Whitby Jet mourning necklace. Originally worn as a choker the ribbons would be tied in the back with a bow. Consisting of graduated jet diamond shaped panels and grosgrain ribbon at each end. The necklace is 14 inches and the ribbon ends are 8 " on each side. The front and largest panel is 1 1/8" long. There are minor chips and scratches to the jet. Weight is approx 34 grams. Mid 1800s. Victorian black mourning jewelry became fashionable after the death of Prince Albert in England. Whitby jet is from a specific center in England. Truly a piece of history that can as easily be worn today.
