This Majolica ewer produced by the Gerbing & Stephen Co. in Austria ca 1890-1918 is a fine example of Art Nouveau pottery. The design motif of this piece is of calla lilies with large leaves and tendrils that sensuously curve and curl to form the handle. Continuing with the natural design another large leaf curves outward to form the spout of the ewer. The squared base is form out of leaf fronds and tendrils making the piece appear as if it had just sprung up out of the earth. The piece is finished in high gloss glazes in green, navy blue and cream. For contrast the interior was glazed in aqua blue. On the bottom is the molded makers mark of the Gerbing Company of Bodenbach, Bohemia which was in business from 1890 until 1918. The condition of this piece is very good with only two small chips on the base (see image #4 & #5). Measurements are 11 1/2" T X 4 1/2 W at the base X 7 "W across the top.
