An unusual ceramic wall-pocket featuring an applied mask motif. The body of the pocket is made up of an overlapping leaf design with the two background leaves in a satin mint green glaze. The foremost leaf is in a high-gloss white glaze with bright gold gilt details. The applied mask is again in a satin finish, hand painted touches bring out the features of the face. The eyes are cutouts. I am not sure if the mask was to be part of a set such as the well known "Comedy and Tragedy" sets or not. To me it reminds me of the "Man in the Moon", regardless it is a fun unusual piece. The back bears the maker's mark of the Nippon Yoko Boeki Co. Probably dating from the 1950's-1070's. Measurements are 5 1/2" L X 4" W X 1 1/3" D. Condition is excellent without any chips, cracks or repairs.
