Waylande Desantis Gregory was one of the most innovative American ceramic sculptors of the early 20th century. Educated at the Kansas City Art Institute he developed many groundbreaking techniques both on ceramic sculpture and in glazing methods. He has had many of his monumental works installed as lasting public displays. After the 1940s he began production for leading retailers in the form of table wares and centerpieces. This box on offer is from that mid-century production period. The lid is decorated in a simple modern fish motif in bright fired gold on a high gloss cream body. Surrounded by gold dots in various sizes and finished in a simple gold dot border. The rectangle box has rounded off corners and edges to give it clean modern lines. The inner lid is artist signed in bright gold. Measurements are 5" L X 3 1/2" W X 2" H. There are no chips, cracks or repair to this piece. A nice decorative coffee table item for those who love the lighthearted modern look.
