Some info about Marcus & Company taken from the internet:
Herman Marcus came to New York from Germany in 1850 and started working as a designer at Tiffany & Co. He represented Tiffany at the 1878 Exposition Universelle in Paris. Marcus left Tiffany around 1884 to establish his own firm, Marcus & Co., with his two sons. Herman died in 1899 , leaving his shop to his sons. By that time, the house had moved on to Art Nouveau, applying the brand’s signature palette and skilled enameling to pieces.
During the early 20th century the firm produced and became known for designs inspired by the French Art Nouveau period as well as their use of enameling. Marcus & Co. Jewelers learned the craft of enameling at the Lalique workshop in Paris.
The firm’s bold use of brightly colored enamel mixed with precious and semi-precious gemstones is unmistakable, and represents a confidence in design not usually seen from this period. This Art Nouveau 18kt gold, diamond and natural pearl enameled figural brooch is a beautiful example.
Throughout the early 20th century, Marcus & Co. was responsible for some of the most interesting jewelry created by an American jewelry house.
IN 2014 Marcus jewelry was on display at Gilded New York, of the plush new gallery (funded by Tiffany & Co.) at the Museum of the City of New York.
In the recent few years Marcus & co jewelry has been skyrocketing at auction houses, many times selling well past the auction house estimates ( I have seen Marcus & Co jewelry sell for 10 times an auction estimate). In Nov 2015 at Freeman's Auction in Philadelphia a Marcus & Co art nouveau plique a jour brooch sold for over $160,000, the estimate was $30,00 - $50,000 .
