I can't sew well so why I have collected sewing accessories I don't know, though I was always drawn to the scarce and the rare.
This is a very rare figural tape measure of a wall crank style phone with bell, mouthpiece and ear receiver, made in Germany in the early 1900s. The silk tape is inside the phone and is pulled out by pulling on the ear piece and retracted by winding the crank handle. The tape is in excellent condition and winds and unwinds easily.
Those who know me or have bought from me before know that most of my items are from my personal collections that I am downsizing and are sold at my cost of many years ago. This, unfortunately, is not inexpensive as I paid a lot for it. A similar one is shown on Page 145 of “Collecting Figural Tape Measures” By Arbittier And Morphy.
I have seen less than a handful over the years, the last one at the mega "Antiques for Everyone" fair in Birmingham several years ago where they wanted and got 795 GBP, that's over $1000!
Measures 2.5 inches tall and 1.5 inches across.
