In my collecting I have always been on the hunt for antique finials to complement my antique floor and table lamps. When I found this one, I had to buy it because I had never seen anything like it. It is LARGE and very heavy. The first few lamps I tried it on, it almost tipped them over because of its weight!
It is fashioned after some species of parrot and is painted or enameled in many different hues of green, red, yellow and white to signify the bird's feathers. The coloring is spectacular and to try to show this I took photos in different light conditions.
I don't know what the bird is made of, except it is very heavy so I suspect cast iron or bronze?? When I purchased it I was told it was from the period of around 1910 to 1920 which fits because this was the heyday of the stylist lamp.
The parrot measures 6 inches high by 9 inches beak to tail. This was an expensive piece to buy many years ago. But it is remarkable, you are not going to see another!
