Delightful sterling silver, fully hallmarked, novelty pepper shaker or pepperette by famed English Victorian silversmiths Cornelius Saunders & Frank Shepherd. It is fashioned after a Queen Anne Coffee Pot or Chocolate Pot with an ebony handle to the side.
I remember when I purchased this in London in the early 1970s. The dealer had a salt and pepper pair, a chocolate/coffee pot and a teapot but I could only afford one so I chose this.
If I read the hallmarks correctly it is marked as Chester 1893. This would fit with Saunders and Shepherd, as almost all of their items were assayed in London or Chester.
Saunders & Shepherd was founded in London by Cornelius Desormeaux Sanders Sr. ( love that middle name) and James Francis Hollings Shepherd in 1869. They remained active as silversmiths into the early years of the 20th century.
The pepper pot measures 2.5 inches tall by 1 inch at the base and is in very good condition. There is some curl to the lip around the base ( see photos) but this is normal for an item such as this of this age.
