Dexterity puzzles were very popular at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the 20th. Most were made in Germany and were manufactured using several materials. The cheapest to manufacture were just ones where the subject was printed on card or paper. The best were made out of tin that was embossed or was hammered on a form like repousse. Likewise the best were always marked as being of German manufacture with the trade mark DRGM.
Many were designated for advertising handouts or had mirrored backs for a quick facial check-up.
They are very charming and very collectible and come in a great range of subject matter.
