Lovely quality desert set consisting of 12 fruit knives and forks. English silver plate by long established Silversmiths, Walker & Hall, Sheffield. Please see the close up photograph of the makers label on the box and on the cutlery. This set was made after 1920 and I would date it to the 1930s.
The set comes in a beautiful mahogany box, which is heavy and good quality. It has a central brass cartouche, sturdy brass stop hinges and brass lock, working with a key. All in excellent condition.
The interior of the box is lined in a brown velvet. Behind the cutlery is a silk lining. This silk material has some age foxing (little faded brown spots) on it. The brown velvet is in very good and clean condition.
The cutlery is in very good condition and looks lovely on display in the box. The whole set appears to have been very little used, and the silver plate has a nice sheen. The pieces have a good quality feel and balanced weight. One fork has a little blemish, tiny spot of corrosion – see photograph.
The box measures 12 inches (30.5 cm) x 9.5 inches (24 cm) x just over 2.25 inches (6cm). The knives are 7.5 inches (19cm) in length and the forks are just over 6 inches (16.5cm).
