This is a very charming English sewing or lace box dating from the late Victorian or Edwardian period, c1890-1900. It has the original paint effect exterior to resemble wood grain, and on the top is a delightful picture of an English country landscape with trees and a cottage, which has a flower boarder.
On the interior is the original compartmented tray and mirror under the lid, on which there is some foxing. The box contains a variety of cottons, silks and lace bits and pieces, a block of wax, crochet hooks, scissors, bodkin and a bone handled stiletto. I would say that some of these bits are contemporary with the box in age, and others are more modern.
It is in very good condition with an antique patina that adds to its charm – the photographs will help you get an idea of the look of the box.
It is quite a large box, so has plenty of room for bits and pieces, measuring 11.5 inches (29.5cm) x just under 8 inches (20cm) x 3.75 inches (9.5cm) high.
Please examine the photographs to help make your assessment of the box’s appearance and condition.
