High quality French glove box or jewellery box, as it has a gorgeous padded interior. It dates from 2nd Empire, Napoleon III period, 1852 -70, as it has the typically classical look, with brass inlay on the top. The central cartouche is very beautiful French ornate boulle work, with brass, wood and mother of pearl inlay. It has brass metal fittings with a working lock and key. The the top is slightly domed in shape.
The box has a hinged, fall front. The interior is all the original red satin, padded silk, so the box looks very plush when opened up. It is in very good condition for its age. There are one or two very tiny pin holes in the silk on the underside of the lid; two or three small age, surface stains; a tear in the lining on the front edge (when the front is opened up, see photograph) and a tiny area of wear to the silk just above the lock. In relation to the interior wood, on very close inspection, there are a couple of tiny little slithers of veneer that have worn away to the interior edge.
The exterior is also in fine, original condition (not been resurfaced or restored). There is a couple of tiny dents on the lid and very, very minor surface imperfections that are only the gentle age patination that one would look for and expect from this age of box. On very close inspection, on the front, bottom left hand corner there appears to be a small triangular piece, but I feel, by the look of it, that it was like this from when the box was being made, because it has the exact surface patina and age as the rest of the veneer (probably the veneer cracked at the corner when it was being applied originally). Please examine the photographs to help make your assessment of the box’s appearance and condition, they will appear as large close ups if you keep the mouse on them. Please email if you would like further photographs or information.
The box measures just over 12 inches (30.75 cm) x 4 inches (10.5 cm) x 3.5 inches (8.5 cm).
