This is a large writing box dating from circa. 1860s – 70, and would have been purchased new as an expensive item as it is high quality. It is triple folding, opening up from the middle to reveal a lovely fitted interior, including the two beautifully engineered, original, brass and glass inkwells.
The exterior of the box is pine which has been stained to look like mahogany. This is a restoration as it would have originally been covered in leather. The box still has a very attractive look to it and displays well. I have priced it accordingly to take account of this restoration.
The box has thick, quality brass hardware, including hinges, campaign, fold down handle and bramah lock, which is in working order with a key. These are all in very good order and are really sturdy.
The interior is all original and is in lovely order. It is black morocco leather, embossed on the fold down flap. It came with the interior fittings as seen in the photograph; this includes some old writing paper and envelopes, pen (with additional nibs), silver plated pencil, a rubber in a plated brass case, a celluloid letter opener and a knife with a celluloid handle, and red sealing wax.
There are a few indentations and light scratching in the pine surface of the box and slight wear to the edge of the box, just above the lock at the front (see close up picture of the front, showing the key hole area). Please examine the photographs to help make your assessment of the box’s appearance and condition, and let me know by email if you would like further photographs or information.
The measurements are 16 inches (40.5 cm) x 11 inches (27.5 cm) x 6.5 inches (16 cm). This is a large, heavy box, like a piece of furniture, hence shipping cost. If you can not find the shipping cost for your country, please contact me for the price. Shipping to Europe is from $24, but it depends on the country and can vary.
