Lovely old vintage box dating from the 1920s or 30s, Art Deco period. It is a typical shape of that period. It is veneered in walnut with a marquetry design on the top, which I believe is Mt Stromboli, so the box is Italian souvenir ware. The patina and color of the wood is beautiful, reflecting its age. It is a broad flat shape and may have originally been intended as a stationary box as there is a slight stain of ink on the interior, or it could also have been for cigars. Either way, it makes a very attractive desk top or table top item.
The box is in good strong structural condition. There are a couple of tiny repairs to the veneer on the edges of the front and back flat side. These are very unobtrusive and you would have to examine the box very closely to notice (please see close up pictures of the flat sides). The interior has an ink stain, as mentioned and on the bottom some one has penciled a number. Please examine the close up photographs and let me know if you require further information or photographs.
The box measures 10.5 inches (27cm) x just over 7 inches (18cm) x 2 inches (5cm) high.
