The is a lovely antique Japanese lacquered box in the shape of a butterfly. It is a good quality box with a sturdy feel to it and the top is decorated with inlaid mother of pearl. There is a working lock and key. The box has some age and I believe it dates to the 1st quarter of the 20th century - end of meiji / early taisho period.
The interior looks beautiful with its delicate, blue real silk lining, which has been painted in typical Japanese scenes, Mt Fuji. There is an oval mirror under the lid and a pocket. There is a pin cushion in one of the compartments.
The box is in very good condition. The lacquer has hardly any damage as you should be able to see from the photographs. There is slight age wear of the gold painted decoration on the top, and a little to the mother of pearl inlay. The interior is very clean and it is lovely that the original interior silk is still in such good condition. There is a little wear to the silk on the inside along the back- see close up photographs.
Such a pretty box and charming butterfly shape.
Please examine the photographs which show the details of the box, and please email if you would like further photographs or information.
The box measures 10.5 inches (26cm) x 7 inches (17.25cm) x 2.75 inches (7cm) high.
