This is a beautiful large antique box from the late Victorian period, circa 1880. The box is walnut veneered, which has a lovely grain and patina. It has a domed shaped lid and a metal plated brass central handle and matching shield shaped escutcheon. There are the original stop brass hinges and lock with working key. It was used for sewing or for the storage of personal items and is a useful for size for bits and pieces and for jewelry.
The interior is all the original silk lined with padding under the lid and on the bottom, and pockets on each corner. The silk is in very good condition (a tiny spot of wear on the bottom. It has a gorgeous sheen and beautifully sewn quilted padding.
The box measures 11.75 inches (29.5cm) x 8.75 inches (22 cm) x 6 inches (15cm) high.
It looks lovely on display and is in very good condition.
