Very beautiful antique box with superb mother of pearl inlay in the form of flowers, including roses, and entwining foliage. It also prettily finished off with canted corners decorated with little pieces of diamond shape mother of pearl inlay. The box is French and dates from the last quarter of the 19th century. It would originally be for gloves and jewelry. There is a working key.
The interior has the original white painted wooden lining and a recently covered silk padding to the bottom.
It measures 9.5 inches (24cm) x 4 inches (10.25cm) x 2.75 inches (6.75cm) high.
The box is in lovely condition as you should be able to see from the close up photographs. There is a little dark surface mark around the key hole, where the key has been turned over the years. There is a tiny gap between lid and base on one side when the lid is closed. The mother of pearl lock escutcheon has a tiny bit of wear on the bottom corners. There is a very minor repair to the veneer on the bottom, back of right side and on the front, bottom right, corner. There is a minor stable hair line along the grain at the back. All very minor detail and part of the patina of age. Please examine the photographs to help you make your assessment of the box’s appearance and condition, and if you need further photographs or information please do not hesitate to contact me.
The box look very lovely on display.
