This is a very handsome and unusual English antique stationery casket in a high Victorian gothic style circa 1870s. It is particularly interesting as it has been veneered in a burr walnut that has been enhanced with paintwork. This was sometimes done in the Victorian period as a decorative feature. The box has the typically gothic style of that period in its shape and being mounted with a large, ornate gilded brass escutcheon. It has matching hinges, which are large and solid to take the weight of the lid. The box is quite a heavy piece, indicating its high quality.
The interior has the original blue moiré silk lining the underside of the lid, which looks lovely on opening the box.
The key came with the box when I acquired it. I do not think that this is the original key because it's proportions are slightly long, but it works perfectly.
The box measures 9.5 inches (24.5cm) x 6.25 inches (16cm) x 7 inches (18cm) high.
The piece is in very good condition with a lovely antique patina, as you should be able to judge from the photographs. There has been a little, inconspicuous restoration to the veneer on the corners and to the interior partitions. I have included lots of photographs so please examine these to help you make your assessment of the box’s appearance and condition, (the mouse will allow you to achieve a large, close up view). If you need further photographs or information please do not hesitate to contact me.
It is overall a gorgeous decorative piece that would look fabulous displayed on a desk or in a hall way, as well as being useful for letters etc.
