Wonderful walnut veneered box with parquetry, mosaic banded inlay running across a domed top and down the front, in a Tunbridgeware style. Circa. 1870s. It is a large box. The walnut is a rich colour, as are mosaic bands of inlay. The wood has a beautiful grain. The inlaid mother of pearl on the center top and the matching escutcheon shows well set into the wood and the box looks very striking on display. It also has its original brass fittings, stop hinges and working lock with a key.
The interior of the box has been restored, with new paper lining and silk, in keeping with the original. It has an opening pocket on the underside of the lid. There some antique sewing tools with mother of pearl handles: glove hook and stiletto, and also a pair of stork scissors.
The base, underside of the box, is covered in the original green baize, which is slightly worn with age.
The box is in lovely condition with only very minor indentations consistent with a patina of this age.
I have included lots of photographs so please examine these to help you make your assessment of the box’s appearance and condition, and if you need further photographs or information please do not hesitate to contact me.
It box measures 11.75 inches (29.5cm) x 9 inches (22.5cm) x 5 inches (13.5cm) high.
