The beaver tail snowshoe was popular among the Ojibwa Indians. Beaver tail snowshoes are characterized by pointed tips, upturned toes, and two pieces of wood joined at the bow and tail. This style of ski worked well on open terrain and trails but not in areas of thick forest. Pom poms made of caribou hair were used by North American Indians to decorate snowshoes. The purpose of the pom poms was to keep hunted animals from picking up the scent of humans and to seek the blessing of the animal spirits during the hunt. Later, with the arrival of Europeans, Indians began making their pom poms from colored yarn.
