Painter and teacher Russell Twiggs began exhibiting his abstractions as early as 1924. A member of Associated Artists of Pittsburgh and winner of the Artist of the Year Award in 1954, his work was represented by the Weyhe Gallery and the Grand Central Art Galleries in New York. The artist's group shows include; Art Institute Chicago, 1947; Whitney Museum of American Art, 1955; Carnegie Institute International, Pittsburgh, 1955-1967; Museum of Modern Art, 1956; Corcoran Gallery Art, 1957. His work resides in the permanent collections of major museums: Whitney Museum of American Art; Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, CT; Carnegie Institute Museum of Art; Brooklyn Museum; Westmoreland County Museum of Art, PA; and National Gallery of Art.
