Kipniss studied at New York City's famed Art Students League before earning his Master's Degree in Fine Arts from the University of Iowa in 1954. Robert Kipniss' works are characterized by a simple setting. Often the image is of a house and a few hills in an untouched silence. Robert Kipniss' colors are subdued and mild. Robert Kipniss has exhibited extensively in the United States and abroad with numerous one-person shows. Robert Kipniss is considered as famous a printmaker as a painter. Many books and catalogues have been published over the years about Robert Kipniss thought provoking themes of imaginary landscapes and intimate interiors.
“If someone looks at my paintings and sees only trees and houses then they don’t see what I’m doing,” Kipniss has said. “I may be painting trees and houses but when I look at them – that’s not what I see. I see an atmosphere, a moment, a quickly passing experience that I’m trying to capture. My art is of intensity, of delving, of exploring the soul.”
