Here is a nice set of books entitled, "The Plays and Poems of Shakespeare" that were edited by the famous A J Valpy for your buying consideration. Would make a great gift for a special occasion, or keep them for yourself.
Beautiful 15 Volume Set of Books that are entitled, The Plays and Poems of Shakespeare". All 15 volumes are here and bound and decorated in the same exact way. The books were edited, published and printed by A J Valpy of Oxford University (Red Lion Court, Fleet Street). The books have 170 illustrations from the plates in Boydell's Edition interspersed throughout the volumes. The books were issued in 1832 to 1834. First edition, thus first printing.
Illustrated with 170 illustrations from Boydell's edition. John Boydell (1720-1804) was an 18th-century British publisher noted for his reproductions of engravings. Between 1791 and 1805, Boydell published a "magnificent and accurate" edition of the complete works of Shakespeare. To illustrate the edition and to provide images for the folio, Boydell obtained the assistance of the most eminent painters and engravers of the day. Artists included Richard Westall, Thomas Stothard, George Romney, Henry Fuseli, Benjamin West, Angelica Kauffman, Robert Smirke, John Opie, and Boydell's nephew and business partner, Josiah Boydell. Among the engravers were Francesco Bartolozzi and Thomas Kirk.
The books are in just in exquisite shape here. We would guess that the books were professionally rebound at some time during the past 180 plus years. The books have tooled blue leather covers with a gold gilt around the perimeter. The spines are just amazing. The title, volume number and what is in that volume are done in gold gilt on a red background. The books also have the publish year in gold gilt at the bottom of the spine. The open edges of the pages are done in a fine gold gilt. Some minor wear along the top edges on a couple of volumes, again the condition of this set of books is pretty amazing.
The books' pages do not show any foxing or brown spotting. The pages are still firmly bound together in the volumes and each book still has all the finish on the spine. The covers show hardly any finish loss. Each book is 6-11/16" tall, by 4-5/16" across, by 1-3/16" wide. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures.
