Here is a nice Seth Thomas Ship's Bell Clock (Helmsman model) for your buying consideration. Recently acquired it at an estate sale. Would make a great gift for a special occasion, or keep it for yourself.
The clock was made for Seth Thomas Company. This is a Helmsman model. Nice brass case and then frame around the clock face to make it look like a ship's wheel. All the spinners are in place.
Just a beautiful brass case on this clock. Same for the flat glass in the bezel. Just some minor surface scratching, no cracks or blistering. The brass bezel is screwed on to the clock case to cover the face. Comes on and off easily. Beautiful silver face on this clock with black numbering. The hour and minute hands match and look appropriate to the clock.
The brass movement look good. The movement was made in Germany. We took the brass clock movement out and gave it a good oiling at the bushings and pivot points. This is a time and strike clock. The clock does the ship's bell sequence, so 4 double strikes on a bell on 4, 8, 12. Works it way up from one double strike at 1, 5, 9. At 2:30, the strike would do two double strikes and a single strike. The clock is running slow. Have not been able to get it to keep accurate time.
The clock's wind springs feel sound on the movement when keyed. The small back plate and screws to hold it on the back of the brass case over the escape wheel is not in place. Someone probably took it off the clock case to get more sound from the clock, but did not come with the piece. So, selling the clock in running and striking condition. The clock will come with a wind key.
Clock is mounted on a wood plaque. Not sure what type of wood. Couple of additional holes drilled in the plaque at the top of the plaque.
The wood plaque the clock is mounted on is 11.5" tall, by 9.5" across, by .75" wide. The clock case itself is 8.75" across by 3-1/8" wide. The face is 3.5" across. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures.
As can be expected when dealing with an antique clock, some adjustments may be needed after shipping to get the clock re-running correctly again as they can be very delicate. If you have not had experience with old mechanical clocks before, I would suggest you steer clear. One really needs to have the patience, and skill to work with these great works of art. They are not our modern plug in and go, or change the battery clocks. Please ask any questions relating to this matter, before you decide to purchase it.
Make sure that this clock meets your needs and requirements before deciding to acquire it. The item can be returned, there is a 10% restocking fee to do so. So, please carefully review all the attached pictures, ask all the questions you have, come see in person or send a friend to see the item on your behalf, prior to deciding to acquire it.
