Here is a nice old antique violin for your buying consideration for restoration. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself!
Beautiful looking violin here. There is no maker's label. Our best guess is that this is a French or Italian made violin from the 1850 to 1870s. Nice arching to the belly and the back of the violin before it gets to the purfling. Nice inlaid purfling on the belly and back of the violin.
The violin has a two piece belly and two piece back. There are numerous cracks, or splits on the soundboard/belly of the violin. No issues where the sound post makes contact with the belly and back of the violin. See the pictures. The upper beak on the right side and edge just above the right lower beak have some damage. Some discoloration and staining to the finish on the soundboard and back. Beautiful two piece back to the violin. No cracks or repairs to the back to report to you. Some minor finish loss to the back of the violin.
The sound post is not in place, the beaks are mostly intact, some wear to the ends. The violin is still soundly glued together as are the sides to the soundboard and back. The graining on the violin, along with the varnish give it a great look. F holes are very intricately carved as is the scrolling at the top of the neck.
Nice ebony key board on the violin with some minor ridging from where the strings made contact with it. The tailpiece, is not with the violin. The end peg, bridge, and sound post (not in place) are with the violin. The 4 tuning pegs are with the violin and match. Tuner peg box is intact, no cracks or repairs. Neck is securely attached to the body of the violin.
As noted before, there is no maker's label in the violin. The violin is 23-1/8" long in total, 14" long by the body, 8-1/8" wide by lower bout, and 6-5/8" by the upper bout. The violin comes with an older hard case (one of the hinges is broken).
This musical instrument is not represented to be in playing condition. There will need to be major refurbishing to the violin to make the instrument playable again (examples - repairs to hairlines on belly, resurface or replace ebony neck, etc). Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures.
