Here is a nice first edition 3 volume set of books about the Civil War for your buying consideration. Would make a great gift for a special occasion, or keep it for yourself!

Very nice 1st Edition of this two volume set. The books are entitled, "Sketches of War History 1861-1865". The books were written by Robert Hunter for the Ohio Commandery. The set was published by Robert Clarke & Co of Cincinnati, Ohio. The books were put out from 1888 to 1890.

These books were represented as being originally owned by a Captain Heber S. Thompson, whom was with the 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry during the Civil War by the party we acquired them from. Thompson was taken prisoner at the Battle of Lovejoy Station in Georgia during Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. We have acquired much of Captain Thompson's Civil War library that we will be selling separately in our online stores over the next few weeks. Those listings will be noted here when made available. Some of the Civil War books had a card in the book with Heber's name on it, others had the name inked on one of the front pages (vol 3) like this set, did not have either.

Thompson actually wrote a book himself called "First Defenders" in 1910 which was about the unit he served in from April 1861 on. We have a couple of copies of that book which we will be making available to you separately on our store sites.

Attached below is a picture of Captain Thompson and his gravestone;

This set of books does not come to the market very often. It is one of only a few of the first edition versions that we could find online.

The books consist of 22 papers read before the Ohio Commandery, Military Order of the Loyal Legion (MOLUS), including Vicksburg, Chickamauga, Chancellorsville, etc. Personal accounts by participants with maps and illustrations. Includes Gettysburg, Red River Expedition, care of prisoners-North and South, Libby Prison, Telegraphers Corps, and more.

Very desirable copy of this classic Civil War book issuance. The book has a blue cloth hardcovers with a gold gilt medal on the front of it. The title of the book, author, and volume is done in gold gilt on the spine as well. The front and back covers are still securely attached to the rest of the books at the spine. Some minor rub to the covers at the edges. The is gold gilt on the top of the cut pages, not on the side or bottom.

Some light browning of the pages. No foxing or brown spotting. Some minor soiling in places. The book's pages are all intact, no tears, missing pages or repairs. No writing or owner's stamps in either volume. Wear to the spine finish. Volumes 1 and 2 show discoloration of the spine probably from sunlight exposure.

The books are still well bound. The hardboard covers are securely attached. No musty, tobacco, or mildewy smell. A dusty smell to the books being over 125 years old.

Each book is 9.75" tall, by 6.5" across, by 1.5" wide. The first volume 435 pages in length. The second volume is 431 pages in length. The third volume is 471 pages in length Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures. Don’t be shy to make an offer, we are always open to reasonable suggestions.
