Here is a nice first edition book about the Civil War (Regimental Losses of the Civil War) for your buying consideration. Would make a great gift for a special occasion, or keep it for yourself!
Very nice 1st Edition of this Civil War book. The books is entitled, "Regimental Losses of the American Civil War". Written by William Fox. The set was published by the Albany Publishing Co of Albany, NY in 1889. The book is a first edition.
These books were represented as being originally owned by a Captain Heber S. Thompson, whom was with the 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry during the Civil War by the party we acquired them from. Thompson was taken prisoner at the Battle of Lovejoy Station in Georgia during Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. We have acquired much of Captain Thompson's Civil War library that we will be selling separately in our online stores over the next few weeks. Those listings will be noted here when made available. Some of the Civil War books had a card in the book with Heber's name on it, others had the name penciled on one of the front pages like this set.
Thompson actually wrote a book himself called "First Defenders" in 1910 which was about the unit he served in from April 1861 on. We have a couple of copies of that book which we will be making available to you separately on our store sites.
Attached below is a picture of Captain Thompson and his gravestone;
This set of books does not come to the market very often. It is one of only a few of the first edition versions that we could find online.
Very desirable copy of this classic Civil War book issuance. The book has a black cloth hardcover with a gold gilt design of the title on the front. The title of the book, author name is done in gold git on the spine as well. The front and back covers are still securely attached to the rest of the book at the spine. Some minor rub to the covers at the edges. Interesting cut out of a newspaper article that reviewed the book when it first came out. See pic.
Regimental Losses is one of the most important reference sources for anyone studying America's Civil War. William F. Fox, a Colonel during the war, used documents from both the Federal Government and State Governments to compile this massive work. Regimental Losses includes statistics and analyses detailing the number of men killed in particular battles; the regiments that lost the most men throughout the war and in particular battles; the "Three Hundred Fighting Regiments" of the Union Army; the total number of men who enlisted by state; and losses by state. But Fox's work is not all about the numbers. Fox includes chapters on Generals, Chaplains, and Surgeons killed in battle; a history of each Army Corps; famous Divisions and Brigades; and the history of U. S. Colored Regiments and their losses in the war. A concluding chapter provides losses in the Confederate Army, including Confederate Generals killed in action; the strength of the various Confederate Armies; and losses in individual Confederate Regiments in particular battles. Anyone studying the American Civil War, from the most seasoned scholar to the newest enthusiast, should have Fox's Regimental Losses on their library shelves. Index included.
Some light browning of the pages. No foxing or brown spotting. Some minor soiling in places. The book's pages are all intact, no tears, missing pages or repairs. The previous owner's name, Captain Heber Thompson is written on the title page.
The books are tight and well bound. The hardboard covers are securely attached. No musty, tobacco, or mildewy smell. A dusty smell to the book being almost 130 years old.
Each book is 11-7/8" tall, by 9-3/8" across, by 1-7/8" wide. The book is 594 pages in length. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures. Don’t be shy to make an offer, we are always open to reasonable suggestions.
