Here is a nice first edition 2 volume set of books about the Civil War (The Personal Memoirs of P H Sheridan) for your buying consideration. Would make a great gift for a special occasion, or keep it for yourself!

Very nice 1st Edition of this two volume set. The books are entitled, "Personal Memoirs of P H Sheridan". Written by Phil Sheridan. The set was published by Charles L Webster & Company of New York in 1888. These books are first editions.

These books were represented as being originally owned by a Captain Heber S. Thompson, whom was with the 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry during the Civil War by the party we acquired them from. Thompson was taken prisoner at the Battle of Lovejoy Station in Georgia during Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. We have acquired much of Captain Thompson's Civil War library that we will be selling separately in our online stores over the next few weeks. Those listings will be noted here when made available. Some of the Civil War books had a card in the book with Heber's name on it, others had the name penciled on one of the front pages and some, like this set, did not have either. Thompson actually wrote a book himself called "First Defenders" in 1910 which was about the unit he served in from April 1861 on. We have a couple of copies of that book which we will be making available to you separately on our store sites.

This set of books does not come to the market very often. It is one of only a few of the first edition versions that we could find online.

Very desirable copy of this classic Civil War book issuance. The book has a green cloth hardcovers cloth with a gold gilt design of him on his horse which is probably a rendering of General Sheridan's famous ride when he intercepted and defeated Confederates under the command of Jubal Early in 1864. The title of the book, author, volume and publisher name is done in gold gilt on the spine as well. The front and back covers are still securely attached to the rest of the book at the spine. Some minor rub to the covers at the edges.

Philip Sheridan was a Union general in the Civil War and his career was noted for his rapid rise to Major General and his close association with Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. Grant transferred Sheridan from command of an infantry division in the Western Theater to lead the Cavalry Corps of the Army of the Potomac in the East. In 1864, he defeated Confederate forces in the Shenandoah Valley and his destruction of the economic infrastructure of the Valley, called "The Burning" by residents, was one of the first uses of scorched earth tactics in the war. In 1865, his cavalry pursued Gen. Robert E. Lee and was instrumental in forcing his surrender at Appomattox. Sheridan prosecuted the later years of the Indian Wars of the Great Plains. Both as a soldier and private citizen, he was instrumental in the development and protection of Yellowstone National Park. The general suffered a series of massive heart attacks two months after sending these memoirs to the publisher.

Some light browning of the pages. No foxing or brown spotting. Some minor soiling in places. The book's pages are all intact, no tears, missing pages or repairs. No writing or owner's stamps in either volume.

The books are tight and well bound. The hardboard covers are securely attached. No musty, tobacco, or mildewy smell. A dusty smell to the books being over 140 years old.

Each book is 9-3/8" tall, by 6-5/16" across, by 1.75" wide. The first volume is 500 pages in length. The second volume is 486 pages in length. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures. Don’t be shy to make an offer, we are always open to reasonable suggestions.
