Here is a nice first edition 2 volume set of books about the Civil War for your buying consideration. Would make a great gift for a special occasion, or keep it for yourself!

Very nice 1st Edition of this two volume set (there was an atlas as well, but not included here). The books were entitled, " History of the Army of the Cumberland, It's Organization, Campaigns and Battles". The set was published by Robert Clarke & Co of Cincinnati, Ohio.

These books were originally were represented as being originally owned by a Captain Heber S. Thompson, whom was with the 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry during the Civil War. Thompson was taken prisoner at the Battle of Lovejoy Station in Georgia during Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. We have acquired much of Captain Thompson's Civil War library that we will be selling separately in our online stores over the next few weeks. Those listings will be noted here when made available. Some of the Civil War books had a card in the book with Heber's name on it, others had the name penciled on one of the front pages and some, like this set, did not have either.

This set of books does not come to the market very often. It is one of only a few of the first edition versions that we could find online.

Very desirable copy of this classic Civil War book issuance. The book has a red hardcover cloth covers with a gold gilt star with a triangle and an acorn within it. The title of the book, author, volume and publisher name is done in gold git on the spine as well. The front and back covers are still securely attached to the rest of the book at the spine. Some minor rub to the covers at the edges.

Some light browning of the pages. No foxing or brown spotting. Some minor soiling in places. The book's pages are all intact, no tears, missing pages or repairs. No writing or owner's stamps in either volume.

The books are still well bound. The hardboard covers are securely attached. No musty, tobacco, or mildewy smell. A dusty smell to the books being over 140 years old.

Each book is 9-3/8" tall, by 6.5" across, by 1-5/8" wide. The first volume 454 pages in length. The second volume is 478 pages in length. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures. Don’t be shy to make an offer, we are always open to reasonable suggestions.
