This Antique Lithograph was engraved by Henry Schile of New York in 1870. The lithograph is entitled, "Sunday Sports" and was done in 1870. The engraving captures a hunting scene with 3 gentleman out with their dog. They have rustled out a buck deer. Unfortunately one of the fellows gets a little too ahead of the others, and he saves the buck's life by taking the shot in his derriere. Very humorous and eye catching piece. Great coloring and details.
A nice printed gold border around the image in the lithograph. The writing at the bottom is done in gold and is not covered by the frame.
We do no see any foxing or brown spotting going on within the engraving. No watermarks, tears, or repairs except what noted here. A couple of minor tears to the top of the lithograph, the longest being 1-3/16" that does come down into the print on the top left side. Some waviness in the chromolithograph from not being pressed down flat that needs some attention. Lithograph shows appropriate condition for being almost 150 years old.
Beautiful wood frame here. The wood frame has a light and dark brownish gold striped frame. There is no matting The glass is intact, no cracking or blistering. The hanging wire is on the frame and the piece is sealed up from the back. The other piece we have that was framed exactly like this was done by Windsor Hall Galleries of Philadelphia, PA.
The Framed Henry Schile Sunday Sports Lithograph is 22-1/8" tall, by 28.25" across, by 7/8" wide. The Engraving showing thru the frame is 20" tall by 26" across. Some brief information about the artist from the internet;
Henry Schile was a German immigrant based in New York's Lower Manhattan, a prolific artist and publisher of colorful lithographs, generally in large sizes.His favored print themes were genre pictures, people in landscapes and dramatic scenes from American history. Indeed, he was a contemporary of the famed genre New York publisher, Currier and Ives, producing similar subject matter, though not nearly as prolific as Currier. Among his more famous prints are two Central Park scenes (also a favored subject of Currier and Ives): Central Park New York, Preparing for a Drive, a summer scene in the park with a mother and children by the Bow Bridge, and Central Park N.Y. Winter Sports, a companion lithograph showing skaters on the Lake in the Ramble. Another Schile print shows a train "Crossing the Continent" -- also reminiscent of a famous Currier print.Schile also produced both Christian- and Jewish-themed religious subjects and melodramatic spiritual allegories such as "Hope" as a woman rescued from the ocean by an angel. Schile’s prints were presumably designed to be affordable decoration for the middle class, including his fellow immigrants. Several extant examples of prints published by Schile are in the Prints and Photographs Collection of the Library of Congress, among other museum collections.
