Here is a great Antique Map of the Leicestershire England for your buying consideration. Would make a great gift for a special occasion, or keep it for yourself!
This is a beautiful antique map engraving. The map was originally done in 1645 by Joan Blaeu. Called Leicestrensis Comitatus. The map was originally published in Joan Blaeu's Le Theatre du Monde or L'Atlas Maior (Amsterdam: French Text Edition, 1645-1648 & 1663-1667).
The map captures the area of Leicestershire. Great Coat of Arms on the piece in the lower left hand corner that goes back to Robert Due Bellemont in 1000AD.
Some minor foxing or brown spotting. The map was once folded down the middle. We see minor tears outside of the hand colored areas of the map. All the map is there. Edges have some wear. One can see a crease in the right lower corner.
Not sure what version of this map this one actually is. Any help with that would be much appreciated. Thanks.
The engraving was professionally mounted in a brown colored wood frame with pressed detailing. The is no paper backing on the back of the piece. The frame is hung by two metal hooks at the top, there was never a hanging wire. The glass over the map is intact, no cracking or blistering. Some pencil writing in the top left corner of the map.
A cherub on the coat of arms and then a whole slew of them in the artwork in the lower right hand corner.
The Framed Antique Map is 23-1/8" tall, by 27" across, by 1" wide. The map showing within the frame is 19-3/8" tall by 23.75" across. Let us know if you have any questions or need additional pictures. Don’t be shy to make an offer, we are always open to reasonable suggestions.
The pictures provided both complement and supplement the listing description, so please look at them very closely as well. With old items, there is no way one can capture all the little imperfections in words, so the two media are meant to be the full description.
Some information about this map maker from the internet;
Joan Blaeu (1596-1673). The Blaeu workshop, based in Amsterdam, produced the most magnificent atlases and maps of the period, the time in which the Netherlands was experiencing its 'Golden Age' in art, science and commerce. A true perfectionist, Blaeu used only the best engravers, printers and colourists and only the finest materials, including paper, to produce his atlases.
In 1645 he published a county atlas of England & Wales as part of his 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum' series. Each map epitomised the craftsmanship and artistry of the Blaeu workshop being finely detailed with ornate cartouches, cherubs, heraldic shields and calligraphy. Later in 1662, the maps reappeared in volume five of his 'Atlas Maior' which is perhaps the finest cartographic work ever produced in the history of map making.
